SunEdison Developing a Solar Energy System For The U.S. Department of Energy |
 |
|
 |
Beltsville, Md. - SunEdison, North America's largest energy services provider, announced today it is developing a solar energy system for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). The solar energy system is at the Department's National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) in Golden
Colorado.
The Mesa Top PV Project will be located near the NREL Solar Radiation Research Laboratory, and will produce an estimated 750kW of clean, renewable electric power from solar energy that will be used on site. This five-acre span of solar panels is expected to be completed in May 2008. The installation could provide up to seven percent of the electricity NREL uses. This project uses a Power Purchase Agreement involving DOE's Western Area Power Administration (WAPA), SunEdison, and Xcel Energy.
Under the agreement, SunEdison will develop the solar energy system, and in turn, receive associated federal tax credits, along with revenues from the sale of electricity to NREL and Xcel Energy's purchase of the Renewable Energy Credits associated with the generation. NREL will purchase that power at a price equal to what it currently pays for electricity from Xcel Energy.
The solar power facility will offset more than 2.4 million pounds of CO2 annually. With this system, NREL will exceed the EPAct goal of 7.5 percent of a federal facility's electricity from renewable sources six years ahead of the 2013 requirement.
The Mesa Top announcement is one of two major renewable power projects at the Department's National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL). The other is NREL's new Research Support Facility which promises to be one of the most "green" buildings ever constructed; the new Renewable Fuel Heating Plant will use biomass to cut NREL's natural gas use by 75 percent; and the Mesa Top PV Project - a new five-acre photovoltaic array, and one of the largest solar power systems in Colorado - will help power the lab's main campus.
According to Thomas (Tom) Rainwater, CEO of SunEdison, "We commend NREL for its progress in providing clean, renewable energy. SunEdison is proud to be part of this significant installation."
